New Leaf is a friendly game designing competition open to anyone willing to create a short autumn-themed game. No signing up or other obligations are required; simply create a game during the season of autumn and submit it by the deadline for a chance to win prizes! See below for rules, criteria, and how to submit.
=======================================
TIME
September 22, 2010, 12:01 AM - December 21, 2010, 11:59 PM
=======================================
RULES
Your entry can be made using the game-making program of your choice. The program you choose has no bearing on judging.
Your entry should run anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes. As long as the minimum of 15 minutes is reached, length has no other bearing on judging.
Your entry should be centered around the theme of autumn. This includes topics such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, back to school, fall harvest, etc. Be creative!
Your entry should be playable in some way. Even "movie" styles should contain some amount of interactivity.
Your entry should be started completely new. Do not use a project that you have worked on before the start of the contest.
If using any of your own resources from--whether from scratch or just edits--they should be newly created. Do not use any resources that you have created before the start of the contest. Previous recolors/palette swaps are fine, however.
If using others' resources, you should have permission to use them. Do not use sources such as commercial game rips and film soundtracks.
Be sure to credit any resources that aren't yours. This can be done as a credits sequence in your game or included in your project folder as a word file.
=======================================
JUDGING
Entries will be played and reviewed by a panel of three judges. Winners will be selected based on the following criteria:
How well does the game represent the central theme of autumn?
Did the contestant obey the rules about personal and outside resources?
Does the game fall within the approximate time limit set in the rules?
How fun was the game to play, and did any glitches severely impact gameplay?
How creative was the contestant in establishing an audio-visual atmosphere?
Was any dialogue interesting to read, and did it use proper spelling and grammar?
Overall, was the game well-structured, or did it feel disjointed or sloppy?
=======================================
PRIZES
The winner will receive:
Big Fish Games gift certificate good for purchasing any standard Big Fish game
$25 Amazon.com gift card
Winnter trophy image to display in your signature
The runner-up will receive:
Big Fish Games gift certificate good for purchasing any standard Big Fish game
$15 Amazon.com gift card
Runner-up trophy image to display in your signature
=======================================
SUBMITTING
Whenever you are ready to submit your entry, simply save your project to a .rar or .zip file, upload it to a file-sharing site or FTP server, and private message the link to Euphony. Be sure you are happy with the entry you have sent, as it cannot be changed after it has been submitted!
Good luck to all contestants! Be creative and have fun! Feel free to use this thread to post any questions, discuss project ideas, or post updates on your progress.

Euphony
22nd September, 2010, 01:35 AM
I'm really excited, too. I'm anxious to see what the turnout is gonna be like.
Also, if any of you guys go to other gaming forums and know some people who might wanna join, tell 'em to participate. The more the merrier, plus we can always use some more members in the Spongie Cult~
Ronove
22nd September, 2010, 01:57 AM
Wow! There's even prizes! Now people have no real incentive not to participate. :P I hope for a good turn out.
I moved this to the official area so we could put it on the front page. :3 Man you make me really want to enter. XD

lol prizes MWA HA HA
I think moving it to news was a smart move, I signed on and it was like NEW LEAF GAMETITION ALL UP IN YO' FACE :3
Rules seem good and easy, and I definitely wanna see what some peoples come up with.
Lunarea
22nd September, 2010, 02:42 PM
Awesome! I'm so getting my entry underway here. Consider me officially signed up! (if there's a list anyway)
Will you be releasing the projects after the judging or should we make our own threads after?
Euphony
22nd September, 2010, 04:11 PM
Thanks, Ronnie~!
And Luna, yup I definitely encourage you guys to make your own topics once the contest is over, so you have the chance to present them with all the fun stuff like like screenshots, characters, story, etc. But just in case some people don't wanna do that, I'll also put together a list of download/topic links and post that in an extra thread.
Ronove
22nd September, 2010, 05:04 PM
Wahhh--I really want to do this, but I am torn! XD Darn you Euphony and making it fall themed and all that good stuff. ;_; I have a good idea too! *glares at school*

22nd September, 2010, 05:31 PM
Mwahaha! Well, you have lots of time to change your mind!

;_; ;_; ;_; but I have an idea! ;O;
Ronove
22nd September, 2010, 07:44 PM
For the resources: can I use the ones that I've had made since like MV? Or would I have to make those completely from scratch?
Euphony
22nd September, 2010, 08:28 PM
EDIT: Actually, I'll throw something in the rules to clarify stuff like edits.
EDIT2: Also, feel free to run resources by me if you're unsure of whether or not to use them.

27th September, 2010, 06:36 PM
Guhhh...I really don't have the time for it but I have a good idea. T_T Does the entry have to be "complete"? Can it be a demo, as long as the demo is well-polished and with a decent endpoint?
Euphony
27th September, 2010, 07:21 PM
It should be a complete game, yes.
Ronove
27th September, 2010, 07:26 PM
It only has to be 15 minutes, Sail. XD It's not like he's asking for hours and hours. The minimum is just 15 minutes.
Barbatos
27th September, 2010, 08:13 PM
10 hour long completed games~
supershigi
28th September, 2010, 07:48 PM
The game only needs to be about 15 minutes long, so a demo would be kind of unnecessary since it's already so short :P
Cup o' Wisps
1st October, 2010, 08:35 AM
Does it actually have to involve a story, or can a setting like Thanksgiving or Halloween be enough if the game is entirely gameplay driven?
Err, I mean like old styled Atari games and things like that.
Euphony
1st October, 2010, 10:29 AM
That would be perfectly fine! No restrictions on how deep/not deep you wanna go with a storyline. A role-play based on characters and a plot, a shoot 'em up driven solely by action, a mystery game based on sleuthing and puzzles...really as long as it conforms to the theme and there's some kind of gameplay, any format is welcome.
Lene
12th October, 2010, 01:02 AM
Waaaait, did you change the rules about program you can use? (Although even if you did it's too late...I already have a story that would work better w/ rpg maker)
supershigi
12th October, 2010, 01:30 AM
Your entry can be made using the game-making program of your choice. The program you choose has no bearing on judging.
Unless the rules were changed outside of the thread, it seems like you can use any program you want.
Euphony
12th October, 2010, 05:09 AM
I was originally going to make it RPG Maker exclusive when I first talked about it, but since some people were telling me in chat that they had ideas for other makers, I decided to make it a free choice. I haven't changed anything since I posted this thread, however. :uhh:
Anaryu
24th October, 2010, 05:22 PM
Oooh, this sounds like fun.
I'll be joining late, but that's a really long deadline, so should be easy to finish something. I have a cool platformer idea forming (glad it wasn't just RPG Maker.)
Now off to see if I can find a spriter to work with me or if I'll have to do the graphics in a different method. :)

Don't you always join late, Anaryu? :P
Anaryu
24th October, 2010, 08:41 PM
No, I usually join right at the start, but they're usually 2-3 weeks deals.

26th October, 2010, 03:50 AM

Ronove

I'm gonna try <_< no promises though.
Euphony
26th October, 2010, 04:29 AM

18th December, 2010, 04:37 PM
Sorry for being so quiet about this the past week. I've been in the hospital, but I just wanna pop in and say that everything is going as totally scheduled--contestants please have your entries PMed to me by the end of Tuesday the 21st!
Also on that day, the other judges should expect a PM from me with the guidelines on how to distribute points. The results probably won't be announced until after the holiday, depending on how many entries there are, just fyi~ Happee compeeting!

19th December, 2010, 05:15 AM

Damn you holidays! DAMN YOU! *shakes fist at the heavens*

Just submit what you've gotten done so far
supershigi
19th December, 2010, 09:30 AM
Yeah, if you aren't finished you should still submit whatever you've got... it'll be fun to check out even a shorter game that isn't completed yet :)
Ronove
19th December, 2010, 03:16 PM
If you guys want to see what I did get completed (though it's not much more than maps) I can show you. XD I worked hard on those maps!
Euphony
19th December, 2010, 04:00 PM
Hmm that sounds like a good idea. Let's say even if you've partially finished, feel free to PM the project entry to me anyway and just specify in the PM whether it's finished or unfinished. I can sort them in finished and unfinished from there and find something to do with them depending on how many there are of each.
Anaryu
20th December, 2010, 12:57 AM
Pulling out; made a blog about it. No point in turning in something that's only levels with no finished graphics. :)
I'm going to have to start addressing my serious lack of an artist sooner if I want to continue making any games or give up on making any more. :/
Ronove
20th December, 2010, 01:21 AM
Aww, Anaryu, are you at least going to show us what you had so far? And you don't NEED an artist, per se, depending on what you're using. RPG Maker XP and VX have a plethora of things you can use.
Kojo
20th December, 2010, 01:23 AM
If I can work out the currently fatal bugs before the deadline I'll send my unfinished game to you guys.
supershigi
20th December, 2010, 02:45 AM
@Anaryu: You really don't need an artist if you're using rpg maker xp or vx. Since owning the program means owning the license to all of the graphics that come with it, you have plenty to work with. If you don't like those graphics, you can finish the game using the template licensed art and look for an artist once it's completed... it's a lot easier to find an artist if they know the project actually has substance and is worth putting time into because they know it'll be completed.
Cup o' Wisps

I'd send it but it's unplayable. It would literally be you walking and the occasional message saying "Okay - you would have fought a giant BOOGER MONSTER here, but since it's unplayable just imagine this was a hard battle!" :s
I might actually pull a quick 2 hours to make a short mystery game, at least I'd have something D:

Well, looks like we've gotten as many entries as we're gonna get at this point. Once the new year begins, I'll be contacting the other judges with the judging priorities, then hopefully it shouldn't be long before the winners are announced. :)
And seriously, just like Shigi said, feel free to turn in something even if it isn't finished! Show off what you got~

@Raven: Yep, once judging is done, everyone is free to post their project and share it with everyone as the like. :)
@Lene: Well, I'm still in the hospital recovering from my surgery, so don't feel rushed. I might not be able to begin the judging until next week.
I wish I could give everyone a more accurate date atm but my recovery is all over the place for the next few days, so I encourage everyone to just do the best they can and turn in what they have whenever I call for it. We won't be too harsh with the judging, promise. xD

~*FIRST PLACE*~
Paper Cut by Anaryu Average Score: 13
CREDIT: 1/1
Creator has provided a list of credits in the game folder.
TIME: 1/1
The game exceeds 15 minutes.
THEME: 0/2
Autumn isn't really a part of the game.
GAMEPLAY: 4/5
The puzzles were simple, but interesting. The difficulty ramped up at a reasonable pace.
AUD-VIS: 3/5
The visuals were simple and pleasing. The main character's animation was smooth. The music had a very short loop and became rather annoying after only a short amount of time.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
The tutorial was brief and non-intrusive.
TOTAL LEAVES: 11
CREDIT: 1/1
Credits present.
TIME: 1/1
Easily reached time, but it did end right then as well. I however continued to play as I noticed there were other things you could make besides just blocks of different maters.
THEME: 1/2
Not the main focus, but very much represented by the trees. Could have used a bit more.
GAMEPLAY: 5/5
Straight forward very comprehensible play. I would very much like to see this one again when it is developed further.
AUD-VIS: 4/5
While basic, the graphics were entirely pleasing to the eye and intuitive. Only suggestion would be to finish the character sprite.
DIALOGUE: 1/2
No real dialog or objective given other than reach the end.
TOTAL LEAVES: 14
CREDIT: 1/1
Creator has provided a list of credits in the game folder.
TIME: 1/1
Hits 15 minutes pretty much right on the mark.
THEME: 1/2
Autumn is not central to anything, but is represented somewhat by the environment.
GAMEPLAY: 5/5
Side-scrolling action is very fun after getting used to the controls. Being able to drop down to different levels helps keep gameplay varied. Cutting and building system is an extremely creative feature and promises to be a great fun.
AUD-VIS: 4/5
Construction-paper background is really well-done and unique. Cutting animations and fading objects add a special touch. Character sprite is animated very well even if it is unfinished. Music does get a little repetitive after a while.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
Instructions are clear, concise, and free of spelling and grammar errors.
TOTAL LEAVES: 14
~*SECOND PLACE*~
Bad Eggs by Professor Yoshi Average Score: 12.67
CREDIT: 1/1
Creator has provided a list of credits in the game folder.
TIME: 1/1
The game is well over 15 minutes.
THEME: 1/2
Autumn isn't central to the plot but is clearly represented by the visuals.
GAMEPLAY: 4/5
I enjoyed the quiet experience of exploring the camp and talking to NPCs to get information. There was a good balance of gameplay, instruction, and dialogue. There were some problems with the UI (the menu seemed to have non-functional options, and things like save and exit were not properly labeled).
AUD-VIS: 4/5
The character sprites were cute and appropriately sized. The dialogue boxes had a clean and polished look, and the faceset art was unique. The desaturated maps combined with the weather effects and sound helped create a dark and uneasy feeling.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
The dialogue was an appropriate length (descriptive, but not overwhelming), and it was interesting to read. The characters felt realistic, not contrived or two dimensional. The dialogue is free of spelling and grammatical errors.

Took me 40 to complete it, and I tried to find all the pebbles. Only found 18 though. :(
THEME: 1/2
While not the main focus it is represented by the pumpkins and tree due to their colors.
GAMEPLAY: 4/5
Very much exploratory. Although straight forward enough as to tell you where to get such things. I did enjoy it though and would do it again. I only gave it a 4 because I am not much of an explorer. I did my best to work with it even still.
AUD-VIS: 5/5
Maps were well done and the music was befitting of the scenes. They could have been a little brighter, but not that big of a deal.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
Good, had no problems with it.

TIME: 1/1
Easily hits the 15 minute mark. Options in exploration can run the game to over an hour.
THEME: 1/2
Autumn is not really central to the plot but is represented by the desaturated environment.
GAMEPLAY: 3/5
Game is exploration-oriented and offers much to discover but can be tedious at times. Could use more mini-games like the snake-catching quest. Freezing glitch when feeding the mice while multiple cheeses in inventory.
AUD-VIS: 4/5
Music is subtle but well-chosen and used skillfully. Maps are nicely detailed but tiles used are limited and can get repetitive. Rainy weather effects and desaturated map colors support the mysterious, gloomy atmosphere.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
Short, quirky dialogue makes conversations seem realistic. Spelling and grammar are free of errors.

The player could explore all of the maps and talk to all of the NPCs is uner 15 minutes.
GAMEPLAY: 1/5
The gameplay is limited to exploration and talking to NPCs, even though there is lots of potential for interesting gameplay. There are several places where the player can get stuck.
THEME: 2/2
The game is centered around an autumn festival. Autumn colored maps and weather effects demonstrate this theme.
AUD-VIS: 5/5
The maps are gorgeous and loaded with detail, and the falling leaves and sunbeams add to the atmosphere. The music is calming and effectively contributes to the overall theme.
DIALOGUE: 1/2
The dialogue is free of spelling and grammatical errors. The NPC dialogue is interesting.

TIME: 1/1
Easily reached the time limit. However I had to restart because I got stuck in the bakery story.
THEME: 2/2
I don't think it could have been more to the theme of the competition.
GAMEPLAY: 4/5
Only comment here is that it was a explore and find this and that game. I would have liked a little more direction on here to go and such, but it was well enough that I figured it out.
AUD-VIS: 5/5
Great work here. The mapping was simply superb! The music was great as well.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
I didn't notice anything off about the dialog and it was to the point enough, that I was able to figure out where I wanted to go.

Play is limited to simple map exploration that can be finished in under 15 minutes.
GAMEPLAY: 1/5
Gameplay is limited to map exploration and speaking to NPCs. To-do log and unique world map style promise to be interesting features. Several areas where player can get stuck and is unable to go backwards.
THEME: 2/2
Plot and dialogue are centered around an autumn festival. Autumnal maps and weather effects support this theme.
AUD-VIS: 5/5
Beautiful tilesets. Maps are very well done and have obviously taken a lot of care and effort. Details such as sunrays, swimming fish, and falling leaves add a special touch to the atmosphere. Music is catchy, fitting, and consistent in style.
DIALOGUE: 2/2
Spelling and grammar are free of errors. NPCs have non-generic dialogue.

ZOMBORAMA by Kojo Average Score: 7

TIME: 1/1
I played this for like 10 minutes before finally being able to open a door. Turns out I had to shoot it. After that it was fine.
THEME: 0/2
Not represented at all in the game.
GAMEPLAY: 2/5
Once you finally figured out the controls it was fun and pretty easy, but until that point it was painful! I also noticed a glitch, but it only happened in OpenGL mode. I fell through the ground into a tunnel, but I couldn't do so when using d3d drivers. Also, if you are to give a gun for a weapon, give a cross hair to work with as it is near impossible to figure where it will hit. Especially when you can run almost as fast as the bullets.
AUD-VIS: 3/5
3D! Well, that was about it. Sound effects sounded befitting, but there is still a lot of clean up needed. D3D rendered the graphics the clearest and they were pretty good. No concerns there.
DIALOGUE: 1/2
Dialog was only represented in the form of "A gun!" and the like. "Time to kill some zombie scum" was probably my favorite though.

Congratulations to Anaryu! I'm hoping you'll post the game as I'm ready to play it after reading those awesome reviews. Of course, Ronnie and Kojo too! I'm excited to play all the games!
Also:
There were some problems with the UI (the menu seemed to have non-functional options, and things like save and exit were not properly labeled).
Someone forgot to install fonts!

Wow, just barely edged out the competition (very close!) - can't wait to see the other entries!
I thought the actual games would be posted a while ago (like when they were submit), was never really a secret for any of us I think!
Mine was: http://anamei.net/files/games/PaperCut.zip
(actually, I don't protect just about ANY of my files, all my in-progress or unencrypted projects can usually be found somewhere in a folder like: http://anamei.net/files/)
