Could this be the end?

A quote from the text.

"A team of software developers is hard at work on a "stupid filter" that promises to do to idiotic online comments what a spam filter does to junk and unwanted e-mail"

...what, nothing then? lol

I was so confused because the date on that article is Nov 12th, 2007 but it's only Nov 8th ...

I'd rather have a giant virtual soft-foam hand that physically slaps someone upside the head when they're being idiots.

These guys are my new true loves.

I just adore the stupidity they've collected from all over youtube for their project. Imagine never seeing posts like these (http://stupidfilter.org/random.php) ever again.

Oh dear god, please make it so....

There doesn't go a day on deviant art when I don't regret making those dress-up games that brought in so many morons. (altho, publicly ridiculing them has helped a bit)

They're going to filter stupid posts on youtube? If that's true then 95% of the comments will disappear. I seriously only check on the "Master of the Wind - All I Want" video on youtube to laugh at the ridiculous comments.

No kidding. What fun is Youtube if there are no stupid comments to read while it's loading? D: Also, that's going to be rather tricky for casual messages that's intended to be light hearted to another member, or the like. I spotted a few from going through the random idiocy generator, although most were right on with the idiocy detection.

No, they're using stupid posts from YouTube in order to test the rules that the idiot filter uses to filter posts. For example, looking for excessive chatspeak, lack of punctuation, too few or too many capital letters, too many explanation points or periods, that sort of thing.

What better place than YouTube to find idiotic posts to construct an idiot filter algorithm?

Jim: 'Stupid filter'? Imagine if they installed one of those in a WalMart.
Me: No one would go there anymore.

If anything, I love the tone of the article. If it doesn't turn out to be successful (which I'm not holding my breath), then at least the article about it was a good laugh.

And Tana, I feel for you. I get the same thing over my YGO/HP fics. At least you're doing something for one fandom; combining two fandoms whose fanbase consist primarily of retards? I'm never doing it again.

Fool,

Whenever you write your pathetic excuses of a story, make sure you actually
give a warning of Yaoi. I may not have written a story myself, but despite
that I know that I know a sloppy and pathetic writer when I read a story.
Normally I would call you a coward, say that you were afraid that if you put
Yaoi on your non-SE stories you would lose readers but I will not judge you by
not doing that. Go ahead. Delete all the worthless and pathetic stories that
you call your "" and leave this site, because I couldn't care less if you
did. Please. Stop trying to act tough if your bio, yelling 'KNOCK IT OFF' as
though you rule this site. Come back to this site when you get some real
talent.
Hope you leave,
<name removed to protect the stupid>

Note this was sent to me via FFN's IM network, about a story that was not only completed sometime in 2002, but the most that it had in it was a young man hugging another.

Would you be so kind us to UPDATE!^0^

Anhai: *jumping up and down* It's finished! It's finished!

Raylien: *rolls eyes and leans against wall*

Anhai: Now whenever you want to you can start the third one! One of my favorites!

Raylien: *sighs* we went through this once before...darnit

Anhai: *smailes* We can't wait for the next one! Well we hope you feel better soon and good-bye!

Raylien: yeah, bye...

Anhai: *waves*

I wonder if these people realize how retarded they sound?

Aw, I loved this chapter! =D Please keep writing! Also, are you planning on making Yugi and Draco a couple? Just curious =D

Sure, I'll make them a couple just to satisfy your yaoi-istic cravings. Never mind that they barely say two words to each other half the time, and Draco called Yuugi a "starfish head" and not in an endearing way. But there's TWU WUB there, so I have to do it.

Stupidity... gone from the internet? Incredible, it's like a bible tale for the modern ages; God smites the unworthy.

It's a very interesting concept, but I do see a lot of kinks that will have to be worked out on the horizon: How will the filter recognise someone who is being purposefully stupid, from someone who does not master the english language? Furthermore, will it be applicable in every language? For all we know, once installed on a french forum, the filter will see everything as "unreadable crap".

Well, it measures the post based on predifined rules, rates it, and blocks it based on that rating. So if a post is otherwise perfectly intelligable, but then has a line like "OMG u r rite, cloudrulez087!!!!111! cloud rulezzzz!" for irony, it will probably pass the "stupid test." However, if that line is the whole post, then ironic or not it wouldn't allow it to be posted.

In theory, a persistant spammer could copy and past a paragraph from Britanica.com below his nonsense, thus fooling the stupidity filter. But I suspect most would be too lazy/stupid to do it.

As to the second part, of course different rules would have to be developed for each language. Especially since one of the measures is the number of misspelled words (that aren't difficult to spell, that is).

It also can't filter out all idiocy, just idiocy expressed with chatspeak/misspellings/caps lock/etc. As the site says, grammatically correct argument about the necessity of arming grade schoolers with rocket launchers would pass the filter. We're not talking about strong AI here, just something that uses a sophisticated set of rules to classify something, like your spam filter. Some will slip through, some will be blocked when it possibly shouldn't have.

The ironic thing is that the idea is really stupid. If my computer had one of those blockers it wouldn't let that page load :P
