I just realized the smilies changed! And while they are really cute, they are REALLY TINY. And why couldn't we have a say in who changed the smilies? That's kinda unfair. :\ I guess that's all I have about that subject--why couldn't we have a say in what kind of smilies, and why do they have to be so small?

Yea, exactly what Rye said.
And they are waaaay to tiny...

They're really too small. I like the 14px smilies, but even they are a little to small considering you use a 1680 x 1050 screen resolution.

Agreed, too small.

I already thought they were too small for the forums, yet i did not have a say in the matter, so i apologise about it.

The 14s are in there.... But the code is different. Perhaps they should be switched so the 14s are the the standard ones and the 16 are the variants. I liked being able to choose which smiley set you saw, but since we don't have any variant skins yet, we can't do that.

I designed the smilies for a 12pt font on a 1024 screen...
I had nothing to do with how they were installed, but here's the list:

More or less, if it's got a nose, or an underscore mouth, its 14px. sort of. I had no control over this, btw.

I can't believe there's a smiley for "D:". I have to check Disable Smilies everytime I do it now, hah. But they are rather cute. You know what they remind me of? White-ties. ._o

I've moved them around so the 14x come first, but they are way too small.

the zip file is in my topic if you want to but in the 16s in place of the 12s.

Ronove

._. The main thing I really had a problem was that no one really discussed what kind of smilies we wanted or if there was a unanimous decision to be ok with whatever whoever is in charge set as the smilies.

Alisa_Tana

I'm pretty sure these were installed just to put in something different than the awful default ones.

So then lets make this thread about what kind of smilies people want.
What do you want. What Size. What Color. What Style. Know of an existing set?
a collection of smiley sets (http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=cats&cat_id=2)

There's never going to be a unanimous decision, which is why I'm still in favor of letting people choose their smiley set. -OR- to not use auto-replacement. So if you want a text smiley, you can use a text smiley, or if you want to use a graphic one, you can.

I for one, as I've mentioned before, like small smilies because I'm working on a small screen, and don't like smilies being bigger than the text.

I find these (http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=3058) kind of cute and unique.

I prefer simplicity in emotes and a smaller size.

(Well, to be honest, I find Tana's emotes pretty cute, but I can see how they'd be too small for some people).

Erk

The smilies are only there in place of the default ones, which are both ugly as heck and not even accurate to what they are supposed to represent, eg a happy face as : o
In general forums are resistant to change and folks with access to admin-gremlins should, I think, change them first and fix them second. Otherwise nothing will ever get done.

feel free to continue suggesting others or areas where these ought to be differently coded, or different code.

Also, :/ can't be :-/, as it makes urls into smilies, which is a bit weird.

Alisa_Tana

So make it :\ then. that the direction I usually type it as ;p

Lunarea: Yeah, I thought those were fun. I just wish they were a little cleaner on their aliasing. (it looks like the creator tried to make them look anti-aliased)

I kind of liked these for simplicity: http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=4208

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like just plan smilies (though I do love DarkMoon's "HURRRR" set; I watch her on DA, she has some amazing stuff). I like stuff with animation -- nothing extravagant of course, but sometimes animation conveys the emotion intended better than just a static smiley.

I can't type backslash .... so I can't enter it as the smiliecode, for one thing. Someone else could.

Also, Atemu, I think the majority of folks are against you there. I know I, at least, want smilies to either not exist at all, or blend in nicely with the text. Animations drive me crazy, they call my eyes away from whatever I am trying to read.

I feel so left out, and at the same time... not the least surprised. *sigh*

heh. Upload some to an image account and set up a macro to put them into the document on predefined keystrokes.

Alisa_Tana

oh right Erk, forgot about your silly japanese keyboards. I understand the need to type the yen symbol, but couldn't they have replaced the $ instead of the \ ??

How about in the meantime, turn off the auto-replace for the standard smilies... if people want to use them, they can type  instead or something.

A mod that allows users to pick which smilies appear on their quick list on advance reply. (those available on the clicker panel without choosing "show all")

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123116

There are also a couple of mods to allow users to choose their own Smilies. That might be better.

That might have worked well if smilies were all unified in expression. I use smilies in some places I wouldn't in others. For example, in one forum ":D" might have been too extreme so I used ":)", but in another forum the smilies would be of different design, so therefore I would switch the two.

I just don't feel that the same emotions can be attached to a diverse set of smilies, varying person to person.

:P I will probably just end up disabling smilies anyhow.

[Edit: Oh nevermind, I misread, thinking you meant they could select which they want to see via their CP.

Dammit, I have to learn to read.

I like that mod, then, Tana]

I updated my Visual Arts thread with these yesterday, heh.

http://www.paper-hearts.org/pixel/smilies.png

The thing is, a lot of people are lazy, myself included. I made those smilies last summer and didn't think to post them till yesterday. I bet I could make them better, seeing as to how my pixel art has improved. :x

I'll try and see what I can do. Like I said before, I like Darkmoon's style, and she has a few tutorials to follow. I'll try some later when I'm not blowing up worms and see what happens.

I say we take the smilies Tana and I made from .org...har har...

EDIT: Considering the vast array of smilies out there for general use, I'm pretty sure that there should be no problem in finding a set (or sets) that everyone would be happy with.

The creator says that we can use them on a forum under the following conditions:
if you use these emotes on your forum/board or blog, the only thing is linking to my website
(example: smileys by sml-world.com) and just tell me where you use them.

The same person also did these:

Maybe we can install both packs?

Oh god animated emoticons. Luckily this place isn't so full of idiots that they'll be abused.

May I suggest moving the old ones to the "more" list so things look a bit more consistent?
